What Is OSINT, and Why Does It Matter for Your Business?

If you've come across the term "OSINT" and weren't quite sure what it meant, you're not alone. Open Source Intelligence — OSINT for short — is the practice of gathering and analysing information that's already publicly available, and turning it into something genuinely useful for a decision you need to make.

That might sound simple. It isn't quite. The difference between "Googling someone" and a proper OSINT investigation is the difference between finding something and finding the right things, verified, and put together in a way that actually answers your question. A search engine gives you a list of links. OSINT gives you a picture — built from public records, media coverage, corporate filings, and digital footprints, cross-checked against each other so you know what to trust and what to treat with caution.

For a business, that matters more than it might first appear. Before you sign a contract with a new supplier, take on an investor, or hire someone into a sensitive role, you're making a judgement about people and organisations you may not know well. OSINT doesn't replace your judgement — it gives it something solid to stand on.

Crucially, it's all done lawfully. No hacking, no covert surveillance, no pretexting. Everything comes from information that's already out there and legally obtainable — which also means the findings can be explained and defended, not just asserted.
